The mask was invented in ancient times - for example, one of the oldest images of a man in a mask, discovered in the Trois Freres cave (France), dates back to the period from 17,000 to 11,000 years ago. The mask was invented to hide the real face of the person wearing the mask, thereby making the information and, above all, the emotions that we read, including at a subconscious level, when looking at the face of any person unimportant. The mask was created to give its wearer an unusual, extraordinary image, to assign special functions - up to fantastic ones, to indicate a special status, to express an important social message. It should also not be overlooked that in different eras, the mask was used by actors as a theatrical alter ego.
